About

Welcome. I mean it. Welcome!

Thanks for clicking over to the about page. I assume you have some questions.

You're probably wondering why this blog exists. That's a good and fair question. (Sometimes I wonder the same thing.) Fortunately the answer is simple.

What Is This Blog About?

I want to share my passion for genre fiction: fantasy, fairy tales, ghost stories, horror, all things speculative. I want to share my writing journey with you.

Here's what you'll find in my posts:
  • Reviews of novels and even short stories.
Check out the index page for a list of writers reviewed or click on the label short story reviews. (Many of the stories discussed are available online for free.)

  • Interviews with writers.
Click on author interviews to find them.

  • Announcements of milestones in my writing career.
When my work is accepted, published, on sale, or free.

  • And when I come across a word with an interesting history?
Click on the word of the week label to find out.

Who Is Jeff Chapman?

I write software by day, and when I should be sleeping or mowing the lawn, I write speculative fiction that falls somewhere in the fairy tale, fantasy, and ghost story genres. I've been writing all my life but decided to become super serious about it and pursue publication a few years ago after surviving a serious illness. My initial focus was short stories but those stories are growing longer and longer. A novel is coming. I have to pick which one to finish first. I live with my wife, children, and cats in a house with far more books than bookshelf space.

Sixpence and Rye and a Snake in a Pie: A Fractured Nursery RhymeWant to sample some of my work? "Sixpence and Rye and a Snake in a Pie: A Fractured Nursery Rhyme" is a short story that is free on Amazon. Incorporating elements from the nursery rhyme "Sing a Song of Sixpence," "Sixpence and Rye and a Snake in a Pie" weaves a cautionary tale of revenge gone horribly wrong.

Tales of Woe and WonderIf fantasy is more to your taste. Check out Tales of Woe and Wonder, a collection of nine fantasy stories that I published from 2010 and 2011. You'll find a mix of fairy tale wonder and tragic woe, ranging from a young boy's first brush with the harsh realities of war in "A Gift from over the Sea" to a miraculous bridge in "The Master and the Miller's Daughter" to a young girl's encounter with a witch's insidious spells in "Esme's Amulet."Highway 24

Are you looking for ghost stories? Check out my novelette Highway 24 in which a young travelling salesman encounters a ghost on a lonely country highway and comes face-to-face with a dark secret from his father’s past.
